Food Tip Friday: Got lactose intolerance? Dairy is a staple in many of the products we consume on a regular basis. Besides the obvious sources, such as milk, cheese, and yogurt, dairy is found in many protein powders, baked goods, chocolates, cereals, chips, other processed foods, and sauces. Ironically, while dairy is found in many products, very few of us can properly digest dairy. It’s estimated that roughly 75% of the world’s population has a dairy intolerance. Most commo...nly, lactose intolerance. Lactose is the primary sugar found in milk. To digest lactose your body must produce the enzyme lactase. When your body doesn’t produce enough lactase, lactose doesn’t have the ability to break down before reaching the large intestine. When left intact in the large intestine, lactose ferments and produces uncomfortable symptoms, such as gas, bloating, stomach cramps, and diarrhea. Your ability to produce lactase is influenced by a number of factors, such as: - Your genetics, - Your age (lactose intolerance is very rare in children under the age of 5), - Your intestinal health, and - The type of dairy you’re consuming. While all dairy products contain lactose, some contain higher amounts than others. Fermented dairy products, such as aged cheeses and yogurt, are generally easier to digest. A glass of milk, on the other hand, may have you running to the toilet. Most people with lactose intolerance have a lactose threshold. This means you might be able to handle a little cream in your coffee, but you don’t dare to have cheese pizza for lunch too. How can you manage your lactose intolerance? You have several options: 1. Consider eliminating dairy from your diet. There are tons of dairy alternatives available today. 2. Can’t imagine your life without real cheese? Try a digestive enzyme containing lactase before you eat any dairy products. 3. Look for lactose-free dairy products. 4.Expose yourself to more dairy products on a slow, incremental basis. This may help your body produce more lactase naturally. 5.Add probiotics to your diet to improve your intestinal health. If you’re unsure whether dairy is a problem for you, try keeping a food journal and monitor the symptoms you experience after eating dairy.
