Backcountry trail life can be challenging and tough. There’s a lot of work involved and learning how to make things efficient is a skill in its own. The trade off is a reward of a day in paradise, the elation of accomplishment, and the joy of overcoming. We love it when time slows down, we’re cutting endless supply’s of wood, making fires to cook over, exploring unreached areas out of the winter season, and of course sharing these experiences with adventurous guests. Winter wilderness travel is intimidating but when we remember that it’s the most traditional form of Trans Canada travel, it draws us in. FIRE IS LIFE when your out in the backcountry. Whether you use it for recreation or need it in an emergency, it’s critical to have the skills to start a quick and efficient fire if you need it. The best way is to practice, practice, practice. Learn how to identify and process dry wood and use wild tinder as part of the process. Always try to make fires as small as possible while still meeting your needs like cooking and getting warm.... Limit your fire use when not necessary and use stoves, especially in dry conditions. It’s natural for more frequency in the cold winter months, but make sure you use approved fire pits and abide local regulations in our beautiful parks and public lands. In winter months, use a fire pan under your fire to limit scarring and spread out the ashes if your camping on crown land and away from established campsites. All in all, have fun out there. As you can imagine, we’re on a mandatory break due to the Manitoba Health order to be part of the solution of reducing community spread of Covid-19. We felt it would be a great idea to share a bit more about who we are and why we exist here in Manitoba. We are the Wilderland Adventure Company. We officially because a registered Manitoban outfitter in January 2018. We made the decision to formally launch Wilderland as a gateway to ogreater services in the Manitoban outdoor sec...tor. Matt Peters (second photo) is the owner/operator. Since 2002 he has led outdoor programs in Manitoba and NW Ontario. His trip log involves over 1000 days spent leading guests on wilderness trips and day tours. From paddling there more Bloodvein River, to fly in trips among the ancient boreal Woodland Caribou PP, winter camping in the heart of Riding Mountain to backpacking the Mantario, his experience and knowledge of remote travel expands all 4 seasons. Outside Manitoba, Matt has travelled to 52 countries to study abroad, volunteer work with children & youth, and explored the worlds natural places. He is an Outdoor Council of Canada instructor, Paddle Canada instructor, and various other certifications such as wilderness first aid. We launched Wilderland to provide safe and rewarding experiences through connection to nature, engaging with Adventure, and learning about Canadian heritage. We accomplish this primarily through outdoor activity lessons & tours, outdoor education, wilderness trips and outdoor leadership training. Our greatest passion and the heart of Wilderland is to connect children and youth to Manitoba’s amazing natural places. We have partnered with Equip Canada to create the Youth Outdoors Project.
