Public https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkAqg5oQU9Y&t=30s I have been busy in the office over the past two weeks and am happy to announce another video on YouTube. This video was filmed this fall from my photography blind. I was so fortunate to be able to witness the whitetail deer in rut , and am happy to be able to share it with all of you . If you haven't viewed it already , here is a direct link. Thanks for watching. If you have time , like , comment and subscribe to the channel.
I found this Pine Marten while winter camping in the deep interior of Algonquin Park. Cold tent camping is tough enough without having this little rascal trying to snatch your food while you are sleeping.
Yet another reason to stop mink farming . In multiple European countries COVID mink analysis shows mutations are not dangerous yet The analysis found the mutations probably won’t jeopardize vaccines, but scientists say the rampant spread means the animals still need to be killed. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-03218-z
I am happy to announce the release of a new YouTube video . As always I appreciate your likes, subscription, comments and shares. If you have any requests for future content please send me a message. Thanks for watching . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHcK-iCDyiM
Last Wednesday we had a gentle snowfall with small snowflakes that made for some beautiful photography. Fortunately, two bucks showed up and I was able to capture a few images. Typically with a heavy snowfall you would have to shoot a large depth of field to prevent the other snowflakes from ruining the images , but on a day with fine snowflakes you can still shoot a shallow depth of field like I did here where I used F2.8 to soften the background. Wishing all of you a safe and happy new year!
Wishing you all the best for the holidays and New Year!
Here is a short clip of the bull moose in Algonquin Park that I found bedded down in the forest. Last weekend I was lucky enough to have been able to photograph a large bull moose in the park. This week, I found the same bull in a different location. Can you see a difference in his appearance from the photo taken last week to the video from this week? (He lost an antler!) This is common after the rut when horomone levels drop. I imagine the weight of these collosal antlers ...are a pleasure to discard as the moose will expend considerable energy forraging and keeping warm over the winter months. Just for the record, this bull was tracked at a distance with great respect for his safety. As you can see from the video , he was so relaxed that he bedded down ahead of me. I was not a threat to him whatsoever. This is always important when photographing wildlife. See more
This image of a very large bull moose was taken last weekend in Algonquin Park. I measured the bed it made in the snow after it left. It was 6 ft long. That is a VERY large moose. Most beds are around 4-5 feet in length.

Just before the recent snowfall I had a wonderful day in Algonquin Park. We came across a Spruce Grouse, and were able to sit back and observe it. After some time it became accustomed to us being there and went back to feeding on the trail. Then, it gave us this wonderful stretch and disappeared into the dense undergrowth. Just in case you missed my YouTube video on the drumming Ruffed Grouse you can visit my YouTube channel Michael Bertelsen Photography or use this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmCBXK8y1FY&t=128s Thanks for watching!
On one of the few nice days we had recently up in Algonquin Park a cow moose came out of the hardwoods to have a drink from the marsh. I have observed a huge change in roaming patterns for moose in park over the past decades. Has anyone else noticed this? #algonquinpark #moose #wildlifephotography
https://spark.adobe.com/post/9scouMsgHEGY1/ Join Michael Bertelsen and Missy Mandel in person to learn the art of Backyard Bird Photography. Injured bird released successfully! A few days ago I found a pine siskin with a damaged wing. I am glad to report he has healed up nicely and we set him free. I know it is a small thing, but we were all so happy it survived. I'd love to hear your own success stories.
Well, if things were as they should be I would just be coming back from the Great Bear Rainforest in BC. My Spirit Bear trip was cancelled due to COVID, but hopefully next year everything will be back on track. In the meantime I have been offering very sucessful private whitetail deer trips near Algonquin Park. Just contact me via email if you are interested : [email protected] or https://www.wildoutdoors.ca/co//www.wildoutdoors.ca/contact In the meantime enjoy this image of Ma'ah the matriarch of the rainforest. Photographing her was such an incredible experience. Feel free to share.
Wouldn't this be a wonderful bird to photograph. Such an amazing find! Feel free to share. https://www.ctvnews.ca//scientists-have-found-a-rare-half-
I filmed these wild turkeys in my yard. The hen was so busy pecking at her reflection in my bumper that she barely noticed the beautiful display the toms were putting on for her. Even after I moved the truck, she walked back and forth pecking for days and wore a dirt path down into the gravel! What a Turkey! Happy Canadian Thanksgiving to everyone. Looking for moose in Algonquin Park.
Bison are being introduced to Great Britain in the spring of 2022 as a possible solution to restore the woodlands natural ecosystem, and improve biodiversity. Visitors can see animals from raised viewing points. This project hopes to inspire people and demonstrate to policy makers that nature presents the answer to the environmental crisis we face. I look forward to following this project ! https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/wild-bison-are-returning-to
I photographed this whitetail buck from my blind two days ago. He is seen here exhibiting what is called "Flehmen response" (lip curl). This type of behavior occurs after the buck smells doe urine. Curling lips back brings the scent to his nose, which allows him to determine if the doe is in estrus.
Waited near a kill on a beautiful sunny afternoon and along came a coyote. * * * * *... * * #wildplanet #NatGeoWild #exclusive_wildlife #ntc_feature #BestNatureShots #yellowstonenationalpark #wildlifephotography #wildlifeperfection #earthcapture #discoverwildlife #nb_nature_brilliance #discoverwildpaws #opcmag #batpixs_nature #wildgeography #earthcapture #bbcearth #featuredwildlife #picturetokeep_nature #bestnatureshots #wildlife_perfection #featured_wildlife #exclusive_wildlife #nature_of_our_world #pocket_wildlife #cwf_fcf #domoreforwildlife #natgeo100 See more
This young bull moose image was captured in the spring during one of my photography workshops. He is likely getting ready for the rut now, which starts in late September to mid October. * * * *... * #raw_canada #ontarioforyou #discoverontario #livelovecanada #explorersedge #opcmag #batpixs_nature #wildgeography #earthcapture #bbcearth #featuredwildlife #picturetokeep_nature #bestnatureshots #wildlife_perfection #cangeoshare #featured_wildlife #exclusive_wildlife #nature_of_our_world #pocket_wildlife #canada_photo_lovers #canada_photo #cwf_fcf #domoreforwildlife #natgeo #natgeo100 #canadian_creatives #ig_great_shots_canada See more
While photographing Whitetails we stopped to capture one of the many hummingbirds that visit the area. We had a beautiful shoot yesterday morning with two fawns running around the meadow. Multiple whitetail deer and fawns showed up in the field this morning. It was so chaotic it was hard to know where to aim the camera! There are still several spots open for my Whitetails and Reflections Photography Workshops. Check the website for availability. www.wildoutdoors.ca
I think the best thing about photographing any creature in the water is the chance of getting some nice reflections. This image was captured near Algonquin Park during one of my loon workshops.
To watch the story of my great day in Algonquin Park, see my new YouTube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BZVtXX54xw. Please subscribe, share, and like. I love to hear your comments and questions. Have a safe and happy long weekend!
Finally, with some time off I decided to spend an evening in my blind. When this beautiful doe showed up, her big ears picked up the sound of my shutter. She turned to look in my direction and offered me this pose.
