We could not be more proud to announce that @YorkUPhysics Prof Eric Hessels has received the prestigious 2020 CAP Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Physics by @...CAPhys. Please join us in congratulating him! bit.ly/2IBNcje Dr. Hessels’ work has far-reaching consequences for our understanding of the laws of physics and may help answer some of the unresolved fundamental questions of the Universe, said Rui Wang, Dean of the Faculty of Sciencs. His impact at York University and within our faculty has been enormous, as is the imprint his research will leave on the discipline of physics. #yuresearch

Happy anniversary to our 1M telescope! It’s been one year since the 1M was installed at the Allan I. Carswell Observatory here at YorkU. We are proud to be home... to the largest telescope on any Canadian university campus, and are excited to see what the 1M has in store for us in the future. We’ll be celebrating the 1M on Wedneday, August 19 with special interviews with Professor Paul Delaney and Dr. Allan I. Carswell on the Observatory’s youtube channel. You can join the livestream Wednesday August 19th at 7:30 PM EST (and every week at this time) at www.youtube.com/user/YorkUObservatory/live. *The second image is a beautiful shot of the Dumbbell Nebula - one of the very first images taken when the 1M was installed, at first light.
Heads up! The Perseid meteor shower peaks tonight! The Perseids put on an amazing show with meteors radiating from the constellation Perseus. They are visible a...nnually around mid-August, and are easily visible on clear nights! All you need to see them is a clear dark sky (preferably away from the bright lights of a big city), and some time for your eyes to adjust. You can expect to see 40-50 meteors per hour, especially from about midnight to 5 AM. Happy observing! The topic for this week's Teletube episode is also Comets! We'll take you through the basics, their research, and how you can observe them, and also more about meteor showers! You can find us tomorrow at 7:30 PM EST at https://www.youtube.com/user/YorkUObservatory/live [Image Credit: NASA/JPL]
