POSITIVE CLIMB! GEAR UP! But are you? Have you ever seen your colleague call positive climb while you were still actually on the runway? We have. Is there a rush? Not really.... The displayed vertical speed information is normally based on both inertial and barometric data. If inertial data is not available, it is automatically replaced by barometric information. Our FCTM tells us (in the V1 on rotation section) that with a positive rate of climb AND when the radio height has increased, the PM will call "positive climb". This will SUGGEST to the PF for landing gear retraction. SUGGESTS is key here. Positive climb is not a command. It is a prompt to PF who should then look and think. Is it what we want? Is it appropriate? Is it correct? BONUS FACT: The radio height indication changes every 10 ft down to 50 ft, then every 5 ft down to 10 ft, then every foot. (Video just to show PFD indications during take off)
