Thursday paint-along with Michael Downs. This is a portrait done in the style developed by Charles Hawthorne at the Cape School of Art (founded by Hawthorne in 1899) called the mud head. His students would be instructed to use a putty knife to paint with (I used a palette knife ) and paint the broad patterns of light and shadow and not get caught up in details.

Those Kitties as Foo Dogs The Foo Dog family These Chinese guardian lion/kitties protect the property and the people, with their wide open mouths to present a fierce expression to drive off unwanted spirits. They come as a pair, a male powerful Poppa rests his paw on an embroidered ball representing the world and a female, nurturing Momma rests her paw on her baby, a fierce maternal protector, providing balance and harmony. Usually placed at an entrance, these loyal, fierce guardians are prized for warding off evil and bringing luck and money
