It’s Innovation Friday! Did you know that the word "asthma" was first used in a Greek epic written in the 19th century B.C. to describe the precarious state... of breathing of one of the characters? In the post Christ era, the asthma attack is officially recognized in Greek times and described as an inextinguishable thirst for air. Specialists tried to cure the ill with valuable plants and even opium. The first mention of the principle of the inhaler dates back to 1654, by an English doctor suffering from respiratory disorders. He describes a mechanism of smoking. His technique was most definitely not perfected, as he died of complications two years after the publication of the book, at the age of 38. In 1890, Dr. Mount Blayer explained in the journal JAMA a new way to optimize the delivery of a drug to the lungs. He emphasized inhalation techniques. Although the content inhaled has evolved, the technique expressed at the time is the one we still use today. A major breakthrough came in 1956 with the design of the first inhalation device by George Maison, who worked on it for his daughter who suffered from asthma. This device was challenged by the work of researcher Donald Davis, who realized that hand-to-mouth coordination was not always optimal for propelled gas. In 1970, the first dry powder inhaler appeared under the name Spinhaler.
