September 4, 2020 #mikeholland #Higgs #fundytrailparkway #newbrunswickcanada Albert County, NB - For Immediate Release The Albert County Tourism Association (AC...TA) is strongly speaking out against the Provincial Governments decision to scale back or delay the completion of the Fundy Trail Parkway, planned to be opened in 2021, and is shocked by this sudden decision that was made public recently through Brunswick News. With overwhelming support of our members, community leaders, local municipal governments, fellow business organizations and tourism stakeholders, we are against this decision and seek assurances that the connector road joining communities along the Bay of Fundy coastline be completed and opened for the 2021 tourism season. This Parkway is the lifeline that our town needs to survive says Mayor of Riverside-Albert Jim Campbell, Chair of the ACTA Advocacy Committee. Our economic growth is based around the visitor economy, and with the current conditions of roads in this area our growth is very limited. We would like to remind the province that rural votes matter and we are not giving up on this project. In a recent tourism planning meeting with NB Tourism, Heritage and Culture, and a group of ACTA members, business owners and tourism destinations including Hopewell Rocks, Fundy National Park and Cape Enrage, the number one issue discussed, and the priority shared with staff present, was the Fundy Trail Parkway completion, with Covid-19 recovery a distant second. In Alma, which is the first community visitors will come to on the Albert County side of Fundy Park, businesses owners have been planning for this opening for several years, investing heavily in new equipment and new businesses. Many are worried about how they are going to survive if this project is not completed for the 2021 season, and it is on their behalf as well as others in our county that we are taking action. The construction of this world-classed tourism corridor has been in the works for nearly 30 years, and at the 11th hour, with the last section of the Parkway to be completed, the Premier is cancelling a contract to save money? We cannot believe this is good for our province. says President of the Albert County Tourism Association Janet Clouston, Manager of the Albert County Museum. In our archives is a letter from ACTA from 1977, imploring the Hatfield Government to compete the Parkway, noting ‘Nova Scotia has its Cabot Trial, why shouldn’t we have the Fundy Trail in New Brunswick?’ wrote then President Gordon Weir. Successive governments over decades have been delaying this project. With a conservative estimate of one million dollars per year in economic benefit to our coastal communities, had the Fundy Trial been completed at that time, this amounts to $43 million dollars in tourism dollars that did not come here, money that would have contributed to our wellbeing, along with taxes revenue lost to the province. We feel that this decision is unacceptable and on behalf of our members, we demand action and are asking for the support of community members, business associations and other levels of government throughout Southern New Brunswick to hold the Higgs Government accountable for their decision. We have been told verbally that the road could be completed in spring of 2021, with an option of a gravel road on the table. We ask of the Higgs Government: What are the details on how this completion will be possible for spring 2021, and how will cost savings be met in light of a potential lawsuit and settlement to St-Isidore Asphalte, the firm awarded in the now cancelled project contract. If you believe Rural Votes Matter, please add your voice to ours. Media Contact: Janet Clouston 506-588-4508 [email protected]

Welcome to Black Hole: a deep pool along the Upper Salmon River in Fundy National Park. In the fall, this is the resting place for Atlantic salmon making their... way upriver to spawn. The Parks Life team visited Black Hole in the summer to learn more about the conservation work. http://ow.ly/6pdM50yxZvz
