Hau Mitakuyapi * Please share * Pidamaya ye STATEMENT TO THE MEDIA ON BEHALF OF THE FAMILY OF BEVERLY LITTLECROW November 22, 2018... FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE A response to the not guilty verdict of the accused Gabriel Joseph Faucher on charges of committing manslaughter by unlawfully assaulting Beverly Littlecrow and causing her death, delivered on November 19, 2018. Saskatchewan’s legal system has failed another Indigenous woman who died at the hands of an abusive non-Indigenous male. Beverly’s father, John Vanderkuylen, feels he cannot properly put his daughter to rest because of this injustice. We need to be able to send her home in a good way and I can’t do that. I can’t let this go yet because we haven’t sorted anything out yet. The family points to serious errors made, gross omissions and false statements left unchallenged by the Crown during the lead up to and in the trial itself. One example being the substantial breakdown in communication, due diligence and a complete lack of empathy on behalf of the Crown. The family was not initially aware Mr. Faucher was released on bail in the fall of 2017 nor were they made aware he was back in custody after cutting off his electronic monitoring bracelet. Beverly’s mother, Lucille Littlecrow, said It felt as if she just passed. I can’t get over that he got off of it. It’s all over again, like the day she passed away. There’s no justice done whatsoever. This case has received so little media coverage because the family has been silenced from the start, told repeatedly not to talk to the media. Not being able to talk about the wonderful person that matters so much has been very difficult Beverly mattered. It’s indescribable what was torn away from her family, her children and our community of Whitecap Dakota First Nation. The family is requesting an appeal of the aqquittal verdict. Today, the family is also requesting assistance. They can’t do this alone and need help in this continuing fight for justice. -30- To set up media interviews please contact: Priscilla Wolf, STC Communications at (306) 380-3935 [email protected] Priscilla Wolf Communincations Media Relations Saskatoon Tribal Council 306 380 3935
