Omar Ba's travelling exhibition "Same Dream" from #ThePowerPlantTO's Winter 2019 season may be closed in Calgary, Alberta but you can now visit the exhibition VIRTUALLY! Repost: @contemporarycalgary Omar Ba: Same Dream, Dictator Series'Expérience pénible 1' (2012) 'Today is a great day' (2010), 'Délit de Faciès 2' (2013), 'Dommages Collateraux' (2014). .... About this dictator theme: often in our countries, we’ve experienced dictatorship regimes and often when these dictators come into power, they don’t want to leave it. They don’t want to do what’s right for the country and the people, and they don’t necessarily build the country, so I wanted to explore that theme. In addition, there are people surrounding the dictator. There are systems that support him or her. And I also wanted to talk about the influence of everyone who surrounds the dictator and the systems. - Omar Ba (In conversation with @thepowerplantto curator, Nabila Abdel Nabi) . Learn more about the artworks in Same Dream and take a 360 tour by clicking the link in our bio. Presented by @td_canada, the exhibition Omar Ba: Same Dream is organized and circulated by The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery in collaboration with Contemporary Calgary. It is curated by Nabila Abdel Nabi at The Power Plant and Justine Kohleal for the Calgary presentation. . @omarbastudio @contemporarycalgary @thepowerplantto #OmarBa #OmarBaSameDream #ContemporaryCalgary #YYCArts @td_canada @kariscarlett See more

Our last Sunday Scene of the Fall 2020 season is today at 2 PM with Esery Mondesir. The Toronto-based, Haitian-born video artist and filmmaker will discuss Manuel Mathieu’s exhibition "World Discovered Under Other Skies". In this exhibition, Mathieu blends into his canvases an interrogation of the complex history of his familial homeland, Haiti. By unearthing the traumas of state violence, he addresses issues that remain as urgent today as they have been throughout Haitian hi...story. Both Mathieu and Mondesir share recollections that depict everyday scenes. Mondesir’s work draws from personal and collective memory, official archives, and vernacular records, to suggest a reading of our society from its margins. His films explore migration and exile as sites of identity formation as well as cultural resistance. Register by visiting http://bit.ly/TPPPrograms. While you're there, visit #ThePowerPlantTO virtually to experience the exhibition "Worlds Discovered Under Other Skies" at http://bit.ly/TPPVirtualTour

John Armstrong teaches senior-level painting in Art and Art History, a joint Honours BA program between Sheridan College and the University of Toronto Mississauga. While looking for alternatives to having students visit galleries and museums in person, he noted that The Power Plant's website has good resources and great potential for use by postsecondary faculty looking to engage students with contemporary art during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. "While reviewing an exhi...bition via online documentation does not allow students to experience the subtleties of how the artwork was made and the immediate impact of its materiality, the overall visuality of the experience does translate well and offers the students opportunities to discuss the exhibition in depth and to contextualize the work in terms of contemporary practice [...] The Power Plant’s website is a nimble resource that allows me to preserve one of my courses’ key curricular goals for students working online in a pandemic." Relationships between art institutions and artists are constantly changing. Contemporary artists are increasingly influencing museums' choices around issues such as funding, deaccessioning, and programming. Earlier this month, #ThePowerPlantTO's Director Gaëtane Verna was joined by Amsterdam-based artist Ahmet Ögüt and the author and cultural strategy advisor András Szántó, in a conversation moderated by Georgina Adam, Editor at Large for The Art Newspaper in a panel presented by Art Basel focusing on the topic of "Artists Working with Museums Today." This panel explored some recent examples of controversies involving artists and museums, as a path to sharing best practices for both sides. New in the Shop! Toronto-based artist Shelagh Keeley’s work is centred around her conceptual drawing practice, from which she engages with the body’s relationship to its always-evolving environment. From the series "An Embodied Haptic Space," these unique works are made in watercolour and ink on paper, exemplifying Keeley’s exploration of architecture, geometry, motion, and the body. Keeley's 2014-15 exhibition "Notes on Obsolescence" at #ThePowerPlantTO was a commission-bas...ed project that centred around wall drawing that enveloped the clerestory walls. Her drawings on therand canvases were the remnants of her corporeal action; they articulated the moment and gestures of her body and acted as performative objects. They emerged from choreographed gestures as they relate to the limits and conditions of a bound space. Since then, Keeley has had solo exhibitions and projects at MOCA Toronto Prefix Institute of Contemporary Art Vancouver Art Gallery and more! Meet The Network @lucillekim_artist is a Cambodian-Canadian artist based in Hamilton. She received an HBA in Art & Art History at the University of Toronto specializing in drawing and photography. In her work, objects, architecture, environment, and language challenge notions of personal, familial, and national identities. At the same time, past-present states and subtle narratives emerging from memory bring forth a history about war and its effect upon the human body. Kim’...s works have been exhibited at @xpacecc, @bnkr2, @factorymediacentre, and @aceartinc. As I use non-traditional drawing to performative healing methods and photography, the configuration of them led me to video and sound in order to produce durational experiences with subtlety and patience. They have ultimately and naturally struck a vulnerabilitya sensitive human quality that I am afraid to face every time I dive into each medium’s capacity. While my father and mother have been the main subjects in my work, pain as hidden can reveal itself, and subsequently, my conditions of pain become examined. In the end, I still question, if healing can be completely attainable and absolute; or if it is unattainable, continuous, or obscured. The @RBC Emerging Artist Network fosters and supports nominated local artists by connecting Members through events like exhibition tours, collection visits, and artist studio visits and providing resources and opportunities to enrich artistic practices through #ThePowerPlantTO and beyond! #DYK works in Howie Tsui's exhibition "From swelling shadows, we draw our bows" are inspired by a historical tenement in Hong Kong? The Kowloon Walled City was an area barely a hundredth of a square mile in size that housed up to 50,000 people "an anarchist society, self-regulating and self-determining. It was a colony within a colony, a city within a city, a tiny block of territory at once contested and neglected. It was known as Kowloon Walled City. But locals called it so...mething else. Hak Namthe City of Darkness." Currently on view, Retainers of Anarchy (2017), a five-channel algorithmic animation comprised of hundreds of hand-painted ink drawings of wuxia-style characters and the single-channel animation Parallax Chambers (2018-ongoing) were created in response to this infamous area and historical moment of Hong Kong's unique background. The Haitian-born, Montreal-based artist's painterly work reflects the fraught history of Haiti, on diasporic identity, and on the writings of Frantz Fanon. Kader Attia’s Power Plant Pages hit our Shop shelves just in time for the new exhibition season! Our 11th Power Pages publication features texts by Kader Attia, Joan Kee, Carolin Köchling, and Gaëtane Verna, and focuses on Attia's Winter 2018 exhibition "The Field of Emotion." In his installations, collages, and videos, he places the notion of repair at the centre of his practice. His works highlight differences between Western modes of repair that attempt to erase imperfection and those that mend while maintaining the visual traces of injury. On 14 October, The Power Plant co-hosted a virtual writing workshop with the Toronto Writers Collective (@torontowritersc). Participants responded to prompts and visual cues based on Fort Dimanche 2 (2017), a painting by Fall 2020 exhibiting artist Manuel Mathieu. Fort Dimanche 2, evokes the prison where countless political opponents vanished during the Duvalier dictatorship in Haiti. The abstracted image, inspired by an old photograph, depicts children playing in the ruins of the prison, oblivious to the haunted history of the spaces they now occupy. Here are some favourite lines and excerpts shared by our writers! Looking for creativity, community, or something new to try? Check out the link in bio for more workshops this season!
