Knee injuries are one of the most common injuries during sport. Additionally, knees can also be prone to degenerative changes like arthritis. I’ve witnessed friends and family go through the process of rehabilitating/managing multiple different knee injuries including ligaments (predominately ACL), menisci, cartilage, and tendons. The lower body is important to keep you moving and the knee is a very crucial part of that chain. It is always gratifying to see a patient improve their ability to walk or return to an activity/sport they enjoy. Similarly to the previous post, I believe that the first step is educate yourself about your own situation to take the appropriate steps to address the underlying issue. I am delighted to be part of the Peak family and hope I can be part of your rehabilitation journey!

We hope you are taking some time for yourself. And that includes exercise. Those of you who have been to the clinic may have heard us asking how many times you did an activity. Or have wondered why we say a specific number of repetitions. The dosage helps us determine what your level is and helps us figure out how to get you where you need to be. Just like a medical prescription might be changed as you recover from illness, we do the same with exercise. We push the levels when you need to get stronger. At other times, we might reduce the repetitions if your pain is not normal muscle soreness. Don't hesitate to reach out if you need help with YOUR exercise prescription

Back pain is intriguing to me because of my past injury and how common it is. Experts estimate upwards of 80% of people will experience back pain at some point in their lives. My own experience has taught me that back pain can interfere with one’s ability to perform everyday activities such getting in/out of bed, sitting/standing for long periods of time, and getting dressed. Through my education I was able to learn the intricacies of different contributing factors to back pain and better understand how to address varying situations. The first step is to educate yourself about your own situation to better manage your pain and takes steps towards addressing the underlying issue. Pain management is important to prevent a sedentary lifestyle and further complications, and allow you to continue your everyday activities.

Adapting the way you walk on icy, snow-covered surfaces can help you prevent falling. Walk Like a Penguin - Bend slightly and walk flat footed. - Point your feet out slightly like a penguin.... - Keep your centre of gravity over your feet as much as possible. - Watch where you are stepping. - Take shorter, shuffle-like steps. - Keep your arms at your sides (not in your pockets!). - Concentrate on keeping your balance. - Go S-L-O-W-L-Y. Take your time and avoid rushing. When possible, avoid walking on snow and ice. Wear shoes or boots with a wide, flat heel. Make sure footwear has the proper amount of grip - not too much and not too little. Wear ice grips over your shoes or boots to get better grip on ice. Choose footwear with soles that stay flexible in the cold. If you use a cane, put a retractable ice pick on the end of it. Carry a small bag or container of sand to sprinkle on icy spots you can’t avoid. Keep your hands free for gripping handrails or supports. When going indoors, stomp the snow off of your footwear and remove ice grips.

Despite the snow, we are open today Monday November 9th (we just love work that much!) Unfortunately, our computers seemed to think it should’ve been a snow day and are acting out! So, our automatic reminder system for appointments is sending dozens of emails out to our patients with appointments scheduled for tomorrow. We do apologize for the inconvenience and annoyance, we are truly sorry for all the emails. I guess our systems wanted to be extra certain that you know about your appointment For those who have appointments we will see you tomorrow, please stay safe and drive carefully. And a reminder to everyone to bundle up and stay warm, be extra careful when walking to prevent falls and stay safe #YQL
