I really miss Derek. He always made me feel part of a great Canadian filmmaking family. He was an incredible mentor and inspiration. I was invited to join the ...Manitoban film community by Lara Mazur, who trained me as an assistant editor at the NFB on Norma Bailey's brilliant Daughters of the Country series. Derek directed "Places Not Our Own." I landed my first job on a documentary at Credo, as an assistant editor for Bob Lower where I was introduced to the important custom of having fine scotch at the end of a full week of editing. Derek gave me my first job as an editor on "Celmates" - a short documentary that features Derek because humble Manitoban animators Brad Caslor, Richard Condie and Cordell Barker were shy about the limelight they were gaining because of all those awards. It is hilarious and I have it on a private link if anyone wants to watch. I got my first continuity gigs and training because of Derek. He took me under his wing and explained the finer points of crossing the axis and planning coverage on Curse of the Viking Grave. It led to my first gig doing continuity and drama editor on "For Angela." I could go on about all the firsts - like so many of us can but I will treasure the last time we saw him in Iqaluit. After a round of drinks and sharing of ideas about future film projects, he invited Ron and I back to his place in Iqaluit, showed off his homemade wine and lent us his car so we could film the garbage dump! He always had a hundred brilliant plans and left an incredible legacy of inspired artists - in Manitoba and Nunavut. We will carry on your inspiration Derek! See more
