The TSA is excited to be a partner for this year's Architecture and Design Film Festival, which, for the first time, will be held entirely online, so that audiences across North America can screen films from the festival's expansive roster in the comfort of their home! On top of this, we will be co-presenting two special screenings which will include Q&As exclusively prepared for the festival that highlight local stories. Learn more about these films along with all of the offerings at this year's ADFF at the link below! http://torontosocietyofarchitects.ca//architecture-and-de/
Old City Hall Cenotaph Toronto, 1925 William Ferguson and Thomas Canfield Pomphrey . .... Toronto's Old City Hall Cenotaph was the result of a design competition in 1924 looking to provide a permanent site for remembrance of Torontonians who lost their lives in the FirstWorldWar. . . Replacing the previous temporary wooden structure that had been used for Remembrance Day ceremonies since 1919, the winning entry we see today was designed by architects and First World War veterans William Ferguson and Thomas Canfield Pomphrey. Constructed from granite cut from the Canadian Shield, it was modelled after the Whitehall Cenotaph, a war memorial in London, UK completed in 1920 and designed by British architect Edwin Lutyens. The Whitehall Cenotaph would serve as inspiration (sometimes even replicated) for many of the war memorials in commonwealth countries. Unveiled on November 11, 1925, Toronto's Old City Hall Cenotaph has since become a memorial to those killed in subsequent wars and remains an important site for remembrance in our city. , , #lestweforget #remembranceday #memorials #architecture #torontoarchitecture #torarch #canadianarchitecture #remembrance #military #Canadaremembers #WWI #WW2 #memorial #designcompetition #knowthearchitect #warmemorials #toronto #architecturelovers #archilovers #artandarchitecture #publicart #veterans #cenotaph #firstworldwar #torontosocietyofarchitects #Ontarioarchitecture @oaarchitects @raic_irac #monument See more

Our last featured film from the TSA's Women in Architecture Playlist focuses on the career of an architect who, for most, needs no introduction. Zaha Hadid was the first woman to ever be awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2004, with her at-times controversial work having left a measurable impact on the field of architecture. Dubbed "The Queen of the Curve" by The Guardian, Zaha's expressive works continue to inspire and elicit discussion about the way in which unconventional buildings move us. In a "Day with Zaha Hadid", join the renowned British Iraqi architect as she discusses the work on display at a retrospective that was put on by Vienna's Museum of Applied Arts, MAK. A reminder that all movies on the TSA Playlist are free to watchall you need is a library card! https://torontopl.kanopy.com/video/day-zaha-hadid
