If I'm ever feeling lazy, I blame my pancreas. Did you know that our pancreas is responsible for producing insulin? For Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, the pancreas fails to produce the right amount of insulin to keep blood sugar levels low! Thankfully, Insulin medicine is available to keep diabetes levels at bay.

You’re used to dealing with stress from time to time but coping with a pandemic whilst managing diabetes can feel very overwhelming. Stress can affect your blood sugar levels, so it’s important to know how to recognize your stress and how to deal with it. Try to get enough sleep and build exercise, rest and relaxation into your routine to cope with stress. Most importantly? Treat yourself with kindness. You’re not going to be able to do everything perfectly or be producti...ve or active all the time. That’s OK! We are in this together.

Diabetes is a reality for millions of Canadians. For some, it’s a life-long condition that affects their daily quality of life. Our dream is to find a cure and that’s a very real possibility thanks to the ground-breaking scientific research being done right here in Alberta. A decade ago, we helped fund the Edmonton Project, which led to a remarkable increase in quality of life for many diabetes sufferers. Since then, we’ve funded significant research and seen incredible results. We know that with your help, we can find a cure for diabetes. Set up your recurring donation today!

It’s important to build confidence in children to manage their own diabetes self-care. It can be incredibly helpful to break down the steps into checklists that you, as a family, can go over with your child. Here’s an example of steps for drawing up insulin: 1. Take cap off the syringe 2. Place needle into insulin vial 3. Draw back plunger to fill syringe to desired level ... 4. Tap out any any air bubbles 5. Refill syringe to the desired dose, if necessary These steps can be broken down even further as your child is able to own the skill completely!

It’s eat better, eat together month! The research is clear: when your family sits down to eat dinner together it creates healthier outcomes, mentally and physically, for all involved. Aim to have one meal a week together, plan ahead with pre-prepared meals, eat breakfast for dinner or set it as a ‘no bake’ day and focus on foods you can eat raw like vegetables and fruits. Share your family dinners with the hashtag #EatBetterEatTogetherMonth!
